A: Selection depends on several factors: the type of electrical system (e.g., TN, TT), the location of installation (Type 1, 2, or 3), the expected surge current, and the equipment to be protected. Q3: What is an ESE (Early Streamer Emission) lightning rod and how does it work?

A: An ESE lightning rod is an active air terminal that emits an upward streamer earlier than a conventional Franklin rod, thereby extending its protection radius. This makes it ideal for protecting large surfaces, isolated structures, or buildings where reducing the number of visible roof elements is desired.

Q4: What is the difference between Earthing and Grounding?

A: In Hong Kong, "Earthing" (following British/IEC standards) and "Grounding" (following US standards like NFPA 780) essentially refer to the same concept: creating a low-resistance path for electrical current to safely discharge into the earth. Both terms are used interchangeably in the industry.

A: A risk assessment in accordance with IEC 62305 or NFPA 780 is recommended to determine the need and level of protection. All buildings are subject to lightning damage, and NFPA 780 provides a Risk Assessment guide to evaluate a structure's vulnerability.

Q2: What standards do you follow for lightning protection systems?

A: We design and install systems in accordance with IEC 62305 and NFPA 780 standards. For ESE systems, we also reference NFC 17-102 (the French standard).
